ReadingUnit 1 has three essential questions that we will address: How can we get along with new friends? How do baby animals move? How can your senses help you learn? We will learn the answers to these questions through reading fiction and nonfiction stories as a class and in small groups and through discussions with our peers. We will answer questions about characters, settings, and how illustrations can support an author's words. We will also practice retelling the stories we read and remembering key details. |
WritingIn this unit, we will learn about nouns! We will learn how to identify nouns in a story and how to use them in our own writing. We will start using labels in our drawing and writing to identify the nouns- people, places, and things- that we are representing. We will also work on using our high frequency words in our writing (I, can, a, the, like, have, you). |
Phonics
We will focus on letter names and sounds and build to proper letter formation in our writing. We will start with the letter a and the short a sound (like in apple, cat, sat, and lad), before moving on to the letters t, p, and n. We will learn to identify these letters in words and identify the sounds they make. We will use sand trays, shaving cream, playdough, and a variety of other tactile methods to practice forming the letters correctly.

Students can draw pictures and practice writing on the line. They can use the words "I can ..."

Throughout this unit in Reading we will focus on reading nonfiction texts to explore our world. We will learn about tools we use, shapes, bugs, and exploring through books! Read aloud nonfiction texts to your child and having them discuss what the book was mostly about it.
We will continue to learn how to write nonfiction books, too. We will focus on labeling our pictures with the beginning sound (or more!) and using the high frequency words we have learned so far.
We will continue to use nouns and verbs and practice identifying them in sentences.

ReadingThroughout Unit 3 we will explore the big idea: "What can you learn by going to new places?"
We will continue to practice print concepts like where to start reading, moving from left to right and top to bottom. We will start to dive deeper into characters - what are 'characters', describing characters and using the illustrations in the texts to support our ideas about characters. We will have a mix of texts in this unit with fiction and nonfiction. Students will:

How can you help out at home? What do good citizens do? and How can things in nature be used to make new things? Students practice retelling a story and sequencing the events that take place in it. Non-fiction books work on showing the text features that are included. Informational text is used to help students practice the details and time order. Throughout each unit, fiction and non-fiction stories are used. Use the Wonders Reading/Writing Companion for Unit 9 to continue along with us! |
During this unit, students will read a fantasy story about "What can happen when we work together?, poetry that shows "In what ways are things alike? How are they different?", and Non-fiction "What ideas can you suggest to protect the environment?".
Students continue to work on sequencing, retelling, and looking for topic and details. Use the Wonders Reading/Writing Companion for Unit 10 to continue along with us! |
